I remember the many times watching Michael Jordan play basketball on the television as a kid growing up on the south side of Chicago with my brothers and sisters. I have memories of Michael Jordan moves that I wasn’t able to catch the next morning on ESPN (Big up to ESPN much respect).
However, thanks to Youtube and all the other fans like myself out there I am now able to see a lot of them again, I digress. The one move that emerges to the fore front of my brain when I reminisce is the many times Mr. 23 would dart to the rim after a missed free throw, planned or unplanned, and dunk the basketball with ample authority. With this one move he changed the game of basketball forever. Coaches and teams now make sure that the defender behind the free throw shooter is between his man and the basket with regulation until the ball is taken out-of-bounds. He simply caused a ripple effect in the game of basketball all the way down to JV.
Floyd Mayweather Jr’s 2 piece and biscuit K.O. punch right after the gloves touched has done the same thing for Boxing. I can hear corner men and trainers alike in whatever language you can imagine tell their fighters, “Don’t get caught on the break with a Ortiz”, or better yet “Don’t Get Ortized!”. In addition, they will reinforce the notion to PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES! It should go without saying and I definitely have heard it enough on twitter, Facebook, SportCenter, Radio, Other Podcast, Newspapers, and even from my daughter. However, I’m compelled to write it and repeat it throughout my day because it’s such an integral part of boxing, I’m just saying.
The act of getting knocked out the way Victor Ortiz did will forever be stained in the minds of many as getting “Otized”, no doubt about it. But the punch itself is called the Captain Pay Attention Punch. Because you may be the captain of your ship until you’re not paying attention and get punched in the face by a guy you just tried to hurt with a head butt. Karma is a Bi#&H!
In closing, I think Victor Ortiz will be okay and has 2.5 million reason to forget about the troubles he had on 9/17/11 at the MGM Grand in the evening hour. I think the people who were most hurt by the ending of the fight were Ortiz family members and fans. To them he should apologize, for simply forgetting to PYAAT.
As for Floyd Mayweather Jr and his hands of lighting, is his legacy tarnished, absolutely not. He came to the ring and Ortized a guy, just another notch on his belt as far as I’m concerned. The only thing I want to hear from the Mayweather camp is when and where they will be when it’s time fight Pacquiao!
